NMC requirements are :

Language requirements: Candidates must complete the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a minimum score of at least seven overall and in each of the four skills in one sitting. The four skills are :

a. Reading

b. Listening.

c. Speaking

d. Writing

Practice requirements : Minimum of at least 12 months relevant post-qualifications working experience. Applicants that have qualified longer should show evidence of at least 450 hours in the previous 3 years. At the time of the application, the applicant must have practised as a registered nurse or midwife for at least 12 months (full time or the part-time equivalent) after qualifying. This post-registration experience must be relevant to the field of practice the applicant is applying for. Any practice that is not covered by registration cannot be considered for the requirement of 12-months post-registration experience. 'Practising' in this instance means working in some capacity by virtue of their registration as a nurse or midwife.

Registration requirements

Applicants must be able to show that they can communicate clearly and effectively in English. There are no exceptions to this requirement, even if English is their first language. NMC will verify the scores with the IELTS organisation. IELTS test results that are more than two years old at the time of registration will not be acceptable.

Applicants must hold a current registration or licence without restriction with the licensing authority or registration body in the country in which they qualified or have been practising. Applicants that have worked as a nurse or midwife in more than one country or state, are required to be registered with the licensing authority or registration body in all the countries/states where they have worked.

Applicants must provide the details of all practice undertaken as a registered nurse or midwife including verification documents and registration certificates.

NEWS UPDATE

Change to English language requirements for nurses and midwives.

According to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), From December 5th 2018, " Nurses and midwives will still be required to achieve a minimum overall level of 7 in the IELTS test. However, a level 6.5 in writing will be accepted alongside a level 7 in reading, listening and speaking. IELTS results under two years old that meet the new requirements will be considered by the regulator". - November, 2018

From October 1 2019, UKVI IELTS is no longer required for visa application.

Also, new NMC application process will commence on 7th October 2019.
